"Eleven men died, and three women,” Lukwaro countered straight back at me, and there was a bit more bite to his voice. “Four gamers and ten locals, each of them as real as you and me. No saving and starting again, no repeating the level until you stop getting killed, just a distinct lack of heartbeats and no more air in your lungs. Dead on that planet, dead on this planet, dead on every planet. How many of them did you kill, I wonder?”

Please use Stillwater responsibly. As you can see from the above, it's really not a game. You pay your money, we send you on holiday to another planet. It's a bit medieval, and you'll need to get your head around the fact that magic exists. Oh, and your ability to protect yourself from life-threatening situations will really need to be top notch. Because, like we said, it's a bit medieval. In fact, it's a fantasy geek's adventure playground.

We understand that accidents happen, and sometimes you might need to kill a local or two. But you don't kill other gamers, because that's something we'll need to explain to their families back home. And the paperwork is immense.

So please use Stillwater responsibly. It's been said before, but it's worth mentioning again.

Kickass Guns and Samurai Swords is a novella, and Part 1 of the Eredian Alliance trilogy. 40,00 words approx.

Kickass Guns Samurai Swords Eredian Alliance Part 1 eBook Craig Askham

Kick-Ass Guns & Samurai Swords is a sci-fi action/adventure novel that delves into the concepts of augmented reality and real-time game engines, as the characters experience the real danger of `Stillwater'; a video game that's `not really a game'.

As the book description quotes, it really is a fantasy geek's adventure playground...though by no means does its appeal restrict itself to just this genre of readers. Right from the get-go, the author cleverly grips you, by gently coercing you to `stay on top of things', as you battle to piece together exactly what's going on.

Set in LA (but at the same time, all over the world...and into cyber-space!) we realize, right from the first chapter, that things have changed in the world as we know it. Enter the concept of `Stillwater'; a technology which far exceeds what we've come to know as `virtual reality' and which, to quote character Ashvin, "most of the educated world refuses to believe...is even real."

Let the games begin! But beware; here your `actual' lives are at stake, not your `virtual' ones!

Its author, Craig Askham, ingeniously brings `Stillwater' to life, with realistic descriptions that leave you questioning exactly where our digital era, with its rapid developments, is taking us. Twists and turns aplenty, coupled with a dose of dark and dangerous, this is an all-enthralling read, which will have you completely immersed in its world before you've even realized you've entered.

At 120 pages, it is classed as a novella, which sometimes I find lack substance. However, this one's not only going to keep you hooked until the very last page, it's got a satisfying, well-rounded ending whilst at the same time keeping enough mystery and intrigue about it to keep you hanging until the release of the next novel in this trilogy. A must-read.

Kickass Guns Samurai Swords Eredian Alliance Part 1 eBook Craig Askham Reviews

When first picking up this book you may think that it is one of those "Geek-fest" novellas that is all the fluff and no substance and you would be terribly wrong. Craig Askham has created a world that in a lot of ways is like ours only slightly askew. From the beginning you will be gripped by the need to know what happens next and to piece together the puzzle that our heroes are confronted with.

This writer has taken the premise of many novels and movies to the next level. A world where many citizens do not know where reality ends and virtual reality begins. The best thing about this novel is that you get into the action very early in the first chapter. This is not to say that you do not fully come to understand and comprehend your characters, your landscape or your surroundings, because Craig Askham can paint vivid pictures of the scenery and characters with his words.

While it may take you a moment to fully comprehend what is going on, as you continue to read everything fall into place and you will start to identify with the characters. This book sucks you in and before you know it, you will become invested in the mission and will be hard-pressed to put the book down until you have seen it through.

Craig Askham has taken the best parts of dark and gloomy fantasy(which everyone loves) and meshed it with a futuristic reality that is unnerving. He then takes you on a journey but do not expect a clean happy ending, the climax leaves you asking other questions. This is a great read and should be snapped up and savored. You'll be wanting to ask the doctor to hurry up and do a part two.
Kickass Guns & Samurai Swords is a modern and edgy novel. It hits the ground running with the action and gritty realism. The first chapter drops you right in the middle of the protagonist's journey. You will be captivated as you orient yourself to what is going on. You will be immersed in the action and feel like you are there.

There are many moments of humor in the story. While not funny in the conventional sense, there is a dark and at times twisted strain of humor behind the dialogue. If this is your sense of humor, you will find Kickass Guns & Samurai Swords truly enjoyable. The author has an understated way with words. Each scene builds on the next, and everything is intertwined. Details you may overlook at first will be important later. The more you read, the more you will appreciate the subtle yet hard hitting writing.

At first, it is a bit of a challenge to really get into the author's head and see things from the character's point of view, but this is quickly overcome. It is impossible to pinpoint exactly when, but as you turn the pages and venture further into the plot, things will start to click. Like everything else about this novel, this is a fluid process, and things will be explained not by having everything laid out, but by experiencing them yourself. Once you arrive, you will not want to leave.

It is difficult to sum up Craig Askham's work. It is truly different. Dark, but enjoyable. Gloomy, but engaging. Fantasy, but grippingly real and engrossing. The ending is quite brilliant. It wraps up the plot, but leaves more questions as it does. There is enough closure to satisfy your curiosity and more than enough questions to pique it further. It also leaves the perfect cliffhanger for the next book. This is the first of a trilogy, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

There is quite a bit of cursing in this book. Personally, I felt the language added to the grit and atmosphere, but some readers may be offended. Kickass Guns & Samurai Swords is definitely a book for adults only. If you are looking for a mature, modern, and unique read, I would really recommend Kickass Guns & Samurai Swords.
